Letter from the Program Director

Thank you for your interest in our Emergency Medicine Residency Program. We received our ACGME accreditation in 2008 and graduated our first class in 2012. Our program鈥檚 mission is to provide top-notch emergency medicine education and to deliver superior healthcare to the community of the Saint Louis Region. Our three-year training program challenges residents to achieve their best in a well-resourced academic environment and produces highly trained emergency physicians both regionally and nationally.

The 鈥淕rand-New鈥 SSM Health 老司机福利网 Hospital opened September 2020. Our new hospital features a 43-bed emergency department, and includes five dedicated trauma/resuscitation rooms, a 10-bed fast track, and a dedicated behavioral health area. In addition, it contains in-department CT and X-ray machines and is located directly the OR, Cath Lab, and Neuro Interventional suites. 老司机福利网 Hospital is in an urban setting in the heart of St. Louis directly across from the School of Medicine. Our high-acuity emergency department provides residents with an extensive, heterogeneous patient population from which to learn and to serve. We are an American College of Surgeons Level I trauma center and our large trauma volume and critical care patients provides an unparalleled clinical experience. We are also the tertiary referral hospital for the SSM Health St. Louis region, in addition to being a STEMI and Stroke Center.

The Saint Louis region has a well-developed city pre-hospital system that couples with the Missouri Poison Center located at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children's Medical Center, and aero-medical services. These excellent resources and learning apparatuses provides great opportunities for our residents. 老司机福利网 also has one of the few Air Force C-STAR programs in the nation.

Our division's faculty supervise the residents' clinical experience and teach at the bedside to provide immediate feedback, along with weekly didactic sessions. Our curriculum includes monthly simulation, oral board style cases, procedural labs, and ultrasound small group sessions. We also provide a yearly cadaver lab, which is used to sharpen the residents' knowledge and procedural skills.

Through progressive responsibility, residents acquire the skills to manage the flow of a busy emergency department, learn administrative skills, and provide effective team-based care. Graduates of our program have gone on to work in multiple different settings throughout the country. They have pursued fellowships in Simulation, Education, Critical Care, Wilderness Medicine, and Emergency Medicine Services. Several of our graduates have gone on to become medical directors and academic faculty.

Thank you again for your interest in our program.
