Summer Law Program in Madrid

SLU LAW's ABA-approved Summer Law Program in Madrid offers six weeks of enriching, rewarding comparative and international law education in one of the most exciting, historical and culturally rich cities in the world.

Students can earn up to six credit hours in comparative and international law courses taught by Spanish and American professors. Classroom instruction is in English and the anticipated enrollment is usually around 22 students. The program includes visits various Spanish courts including Spain's Constitutional and Supreme Courts. In addition to taking up to six credit hours, students may take a non-credit Introduction to Spanish class at no additional cost.

Madrid offers students vibrant nightlife, excellent restaurants and world-renowned museums. Day trips can easily be made to Toledo, Segovia, Avila and Salamanca, all jewels of Spanish culture and history. For those students who wish to expand their travels even further, weekend trips to exciting nearby destinations outside of Spain, such as Lisbon (Portugal), Paris, Nice and Lyon (France) are also popular and easy to get to by train or a short flight. And Morocco is next door!

Program courses are held on ÀÏ˾»ú¸£ÀûÍø — Madrid Campus, located in the northwest section of Madrid near many other universities and within a 20-minute subway ride to the city's historical center.

Eligibility

Applicants must be students in good standing who have completed their first year at an ABA-approved or state-accredited law school.

Important Deadlines & Dates before Departure
  • Friday, January 26, 2024: Early Registration Deadline. There is a $300 discount for anyone who applies by the early registration date. International internship letter of intent and resume due.
  • Monday, April 1, 2024: Application Deadline and $120 deposit due
  • Friday, April 12, 2024: Financial aid request due
  • Wednesday, April 17, 2024: Mandatory Pre-Departure Meeting
Important Deadlines & Dates in Madrid
  • Monday, May 20, 2024: First Day of Classes
  • Wednesday, June 26, 2024: Last Day of Class
  • Friday, June 28-Sunday June 30, 2024: Final Exam Period
Tuition, Books and Fees
  •  Six-week program: $5,400 estimated.
  • Books, course handouts and fees are included in the tuition cost.
  • Personal expenses are not included as they depend on the student's choice of travel, housing and living expenses.
  • The $120 registration fee will be credited toward international health insurance. The $120 registration fee is due at the time of the final registration deadline and is refundable.
Program Cancellation

SLU LAW reserves the right to alter or cancel this program. Cancellation would occur if there is insufficient enrollment or unanticipated international events that have the potential to affect participants' safety and/or inhibit program administration. If cancellation becomes necessary and occurs after a deposit has been paid, the program director will make his best effort to make arrangements for each student enrolled to attend a similar program, if the student desires. If the program is canceled, all money advanced by the student shall be refunded within 20 days of cancellation.

Withdrawal from Program

 If changes occur in the course offerings or other significant aspects of the program, applicants who have paid a deposit or who have registered for the program will be given an opportunity to withdraw from the program. Additionally, if prior to the commencement of the program, a U.S. State Department Travel Warning or Alert is issued for the country or countries in which the program will be conducted, all registrants will be notified promptly of the warning and be given an opportunity to withdraw from the program.

In the event that applicants withdraw as permitted in the above mentioned criteria, prior to the commencement of the program, the students will receive a full refund of all monies advanced within 20 days of withdrawal or cancellation.

The $120 registration fee is refundable if a student chooses not to participate in the program.
