Men’s golf reaches WCC semifinals after remarkable comeback

Carlos Astiazaran ’27

Continuing its strong season, ˾’s men’s golf program made an impressive turnaround over the weekend at the West Coast Conference Championship at Green Valley Country Club in Fairfield, California.

After shooting a +4 in the first round and sitting near the bottom of the standings, Pacific flipped the switch with a -12 in round two and a whopping -17 in round three to comeback to tie for fourth. The Tigers ousted Saint Mary’s in a tiebreaker and advanced to the semifinals of the tournament.

“Our team battled back incredibly well as we managed to make up 11 strokes and to top it off, win in a playoff to continue to match play,” said Carlos Astiazaran ’27, a business administration major with a concentration in business analytics. “It was a special day, and we played some great golf all weekend.”

The Tigers fell to Pepperdine in the semifinals of match play, but still have a chance to compete in NCAA Regionals. Pacific must wait until Wednesday, April 30 when the field is announced at 10 a.m. on the Golf Channel. The Tigers are in the hunt for an at-large bid after earning two team titles and three individual champions across 12 tournaments.

“We had a goal to get into match play at the start of the week and after a slow start in the first round, we kept battling the whole week,” Head Coach John Cook said. “We unfortunately didn’t get the outcome we wanted there, but definitely a great finish for the Tigers.”

The showing over the weekend came after a historic regular season where the Tigers were crowned champions of 2024 The Goat at Navy and the Leadership & Golf Collegiate Championship in Seaside, California hosted by Saint Mary’s. Pacific also battled to six top three finishes and the top four finish at the WCC Championship.

“I’m extremely proud of all the accomplishments this team achieved this year,” Cook said. “We had two phenomenal team wins and three individual wins. Numerous top three team finishes and a great battle at the WCC Championship to get into the match play component.”

The Tigers were headlined all year by Astiazaran, a native of Tucson, Arizona. He put the finishing touches on the Tigers comeback in the third round of the WCC Championship, hitting a birdie on the final two holes to aid the team into the playoff and the eventual match play semifinal.

Astiazaran, who ranks among the top 100 of the college rankings according to Scoreboard, capped his second-year regular season campaign in a tie for third place individually at the WCC Championship with a 12-under par. He also added to his resume a pair of individual titles, including his first collegiate one at the Leadership and Golf Collegiate Championship.

“This year as a whole has been incredible,” Astiazaran said. “We have played some phenomenal golf and knowing that we could have NCAA Regionals to look forward to is awesome. It’s been a while since we earned a postseason spot, and we are looking forward to our shot.”

With the strong regular season in the rearview mirror, the Tigers are looking to reach the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2012-13

“Hopefully our body of work throughout the season will get us into the NCAA Regionals,” Cook said. “These guys have worked extremely hard to give us an opportunity to get an at-large bid. We will be watching the selection show on Wednesday.”
