Julia Esswein, M.D.
Program year 1
Hometown: St. Louis, Missouri
Medical School: University of Missouri Kansas City
Residency: University of Tennessee Health Science Center - Memphis in internal medicine
and pediatrics
Fellowship in obesity medicine at Washington University in St. Louis
Areas of Interest: Everything right now! General GI, nutrition, biliary/pancreatic
disease
Hobbies: Skeedskating (currently as a referee, but also for fun!), reading, and baking.
I play trivia weekly with friends and am a big fan of social exercise.
Favorite aspect of being a SLU/Cardinal Glennon fellow: I am just starting here, but
definitely how kind and patient everyone has been from the GI faculty to the other
fellows and residents and hospital staff. We see so many different pathologies that
no patient on the list is the same.
Ashlesha Bagwe, M.D.
Program year 2
Hometown: Mumbai, India
Medical school: Rajiv Gandhi Medical College, Thane, India
Residency: University of South Dakota, Sioux Falls, South Dakota
Areas of interest: Therapeutic/interventional endoscopy
Hobbies: I'm very much into food and cooking! You will always find me trying out new
restaurants and recipes. Being a homebody, I love board games, painting and teaching
my cat Kiiro new tricks!
Favorite aspect of being a SLU/Cardinal Glennon fellow: The variety of pathologies:
From the regular bread and butter GI patients to complex medical conditions. The department
always has a lot of great clinical and research opportunities; and fellows are spoilt
for choice. Being a tight knit group, every faculty member is easily accessible and
invested in your academic progress. Excited to see where these three years will take
me!
