Starting in fall 2024, students will have another four-year STEM major available to them at the Madrid campus.

The once so-called "2 + 2 program" that allowed students to start their studies in Madrid and finish at SLU-St. Louis, will now be offered in its entirety at SLU-Madrid.

The new program joins the B.A. and B.S. in computer science already offered by the Madrid campus' Department of Engineering.

"Offering this major at SLU-Madrid signifies an exciting opportunity to expand our STEM offerings not only within Spain, but also across Europe and the wider subregion," said program director and associate dean Taieb Gasmi, Ph.D.

"It reflects our commitment to providing students with access to high-quality education in cutting-edge fields, meeting the demands of a rapidly evolving job market, and empowering students with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in the digital age," said Gasmi. "This expansion underscores SLU-Madrid's leadership in STEM education and our commitment to preparing students for success in the global marketplace."

SLU-Madrid's Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering will blend theory with hands-on design, development and analysis of computer systems and software.

Gasmi noted the promising job market for program graduates with the emergence of artificial intelligence and cybersecurity.

"Graduates can anticipate diverse opportunities across sectors including technology, health care, finance, automotive and more. Potential roles include hardware engineers, software developers, systems architects, embedded systems engineers and network engineers," he said.

SLU-Madrid's new major allows computer engineering students to engage in a comprehensive liberal arts core curriculum to hone skills in other fields.

"In the future, computer engineering programs will prioritize interdisciplinary collaboration, hands-on learning, and ethical awareness in technology," Gasmi said.

The Department of Engineering is working closely with SLU-St. Louis' School of Science and Engineering to offer a Bachelor of Science in Data Science as soon as fall 2025. Gasmi mentioned talks to develop biology and exercise science programs are also underway.

"It's immensely rewarding to contribute to the development of future technology leaders who possess not only technical expertise but also cultural competency and a global mindset," Gasmi said.
