The Academic Technology Commons (ATC) in the Pius XII Memorial Library is a creator space designed to engage SLU and the community in cutting-edge technological advancements and to promote innovation.
As some faculty, staff and students have shifted to working or learning from home during the COVID-19 pandemic, the ATC has continued to support the SLU community by:
- Maintaining an on-campus presence to enable laptop and equipment check-out to ensure that our community still has the tools they require.
- Aiding in the production of face shields for medical personnel by providing its 3D printer and other supplies, as well as using its social distancing-friendly space for final assembly and packaging. In 2020, the ATC teamed up with personnel from SSM and Cardinal Glennon as well as SLU's new Center for Additive Manufacturing to help fill the gap in PPE. ATC, CAM and students from Parks College of Engineering worked to remix and finalize a design that best utilized the materials at hand with the final products delivered to the hospitals at SLU and other medical facilities in under-represented communities.
- Supporting video-conferencing (now with Zoom), lecture capture (via Panopto), and our learning management system (Canvas), which have become mission-critical in these times.
