Dr. Newsham will begin her term as president in June 2023 at the association’s annual meeting and serve in the position for three years. Dr. Newsham has served in a variety of leadership positions within the MAATA: Missouri Representative to the Board of Directors (2014-2017), Vice President (2016-2017) and District Secretary (2017-2021).

Dr. Newsham was excited to hear that she had been named the new President-Elect of the MAATA.

“Naturally, I was very pleased to hear the news about the MAATA election,” Dr. Newsham said. “There was a very good slate of candidates from which to choose.”

Dr. Newsham went on to explain what motivated her to run for MAATA president after serving in other leadership positions.

“I was familiar with the activities of the Board of Directors over the past eight years and know the work that has gone into developing leadership infrastructure. I see great possibilities to continue this growth and pursue initiatives in areas that have not received as much attention,” Dr. Newsham said. “There is a great leadership team in place – I’m looking forward to working with them.”

SLU Department of Physical Therapy and Athletic Training Interim Chair Chris Sebelski, PT, DPT, Ph.D., praised Dr. Newsham for her election and discussed how she would be an asset to the organization.

“The department is proud to support Dr. Katherine Newsham in this role,” Dr. Sebelski said. “Her service to her profession is honorable. Dr. Newsham models the expectations that SLU has of the graduates of the SLU Athletic Training program to serve their profession and community.”

The MAATA is a leader in advancing the athletic training profession through development of its members. The MAATA enhances the professional development and leadership abilities of the membership through engagement, mentoring and the advancement of the profession.
